I’m a senior researcher at Epoch AI, where I study what drives AI progress, how fast it’s going, and how it impacts the world.

Projects

Some things that I’ve worked on:

• I estimated how fast AI algorithms are improving
• I helped develop a statistical framework to aggregate AI benchmark scores, which is now used in the Epoch Capabilities Index and by big AI companies
• I estimated how much you can improve the energy efficiency of modern computer chips
• I contributed to the 2025 and 2026 International AI Safety Reports, which are some of the largest collaborations on AI safety to date
• I helped write research articles for Epoch’s substack, such as about US-China AI competition, measuring AI capabilities in the wild, and energy bottlenecks to AI scaling, among many other things.

Miscellaneous things about me

• I grew up in Hong Kong, did my physics degree in the UK, and now live in Toronto.
• I love playing the piano.
• One of my friends describes me as “99th percentile interested in rainbows”.
